Coverage of Tsunami Dialogue at the World Urban Forum in Vancouver June 2006

The world we live in has changed.
"The conventional approach, in which governments and development agencies look at people as passive recipients, should be changed.  It's time to throw away that sad old rule-book once and for all.  You can hear very clearly from today's discussions that even the very poorest affected people can stand up and be the leaders of the rehabilitation process themselves."

Quote from ACHR's workshop on people-centred rehabilitation at the World Urban Forum 3 in Vancouver June 2006

In March 2005 ACHR brought together survivors from affected communities in Indonesia, Thailand, India and Sri Lanka to explain their needs and share ideas on how to strengthen a people centred and community-driven recovery process. There were opportunities for the people themselves to put their views to the large agencies, governments and NGO's involved. There was also solidarity visits to affected communities in Sri Lanka to discuss strategies and needs.

HumanityThe First Weeks After

TAP the ENERGY & STRENGTH
'Having worked with earthquake rehabilitation and famine and drought (though not even a fraction of the disaster the Tsunami victims have suffered, I have always marveled at the remarkable energy and strength that communities put into rehabilitating themselves. A lot of aid agencies do not realize this. Aid could be far more meaningful with this realization.'
