1.
How is your group
using video
and what impacts is it having.
We are
documenting urban changes and our project work on video, but lack the
knowledge to edit and convert our footage. We feel video is an excellent
medium for three reasons: conveying
situations in a powerful way (for example, urban changes);
using it for vocational training (one of our fields of work);
and also to show one’s work to officials, other NGOs, sponsors.
We are using technology, but it’s like jumping into cold water, we
need some kind of starting push (Maurice is a natural when it comes to
video editing, he’ll be moonlighting for MTV soon, but we feel a bit
intimidated by the thought of editing...).

2.
What equipment is being used and how efficient / effective
it is. -
Camera,
Computer,
Editing application,
conversion to CVD ?
We
have a Sony TRV900E digital video camera, and both Macintosh and Windows
computer systems. We would prefer to do editing on Macintosh, but
haven’t done very much editing so far.
However we have documented significant urban changes and also a lot of
traditional working and construction techniques. We’d love for someone
to have a look at what we did.
Regarding computers and other technologies, we have an archive of so far
5000 project-related captioned digital images, and this is still
growing. we also use digital mapping technologies.
Some of our digital work can be seen on our website.

3.
What videos are available and in what format.
Do you have a catalogue list that can be made available?
We
have several hours of demolition of old Lhasa and old Beijing, and some
footage of building rehabilitation and restoration work in Tibet. some
Lhasa footage from the mid-1990s is edited on S-VHS video (non-digital).

5.

6.
Do you know of any useful information that you could pass on to
others via the web site about the New Technologies ?
we
have developed a system to map communities and monitor change using
Internet technologies. we are not advocating everybody should do
monitoring digitally, but I think we all have seen rolled up maps and
plans of urban areas and communities gathering dust in offices, resource
centres etc., quite bulky to use. in a similar way, digital photography
allows us to display images much more efficient that having hundreds or
thousands of prints. but these are issues we would like to debate with
other groups before we could actually make any recommendations.
