THERE ARE ACCEPTABLE ALTERNATIVES TO FORCED
EVICTIONS
Jakarta's informal
sector is not being offered any options by Jakarta's governor.
In most other Indonesian cities acceptable agreements can be reached between
the informal sectors and governments.
To solve problems for the
city and the poor on a large scale partnerships between government, people and
other actors are necessary. Through such partnership cities can be planned to
take into account the realities of the city and how it really functions.
Without the informal sector
Asian cities cannot function.
In reality, they build most of the housing and transport most of the
people and goods, recycle most of the garbage - and do so at extremely low
cost. Planners need to take into account these realities and formalize
these efficient processes whilst also removing the exploitative aspects.
There are abundant examples of how to do this
- in Indonesia, Thailand, Pakistan, India - throughout Asia. We request
the Governor of Jakarta to take a look at the Alternative Plans devised by
Jakarta's poor and the UPC. See the comparison
of plans for Pedi Cab drivers HERE
