The Block Tanpa Fire March 12 2002

The fire started on the north side of the building and quickly spread amongst the wooden shacks of the community.

In late morning of March 12  2002 at about 9AM  the fire took control and destroyed 247 houses.    341 families are homeless -  about 1,200 people.  The  estimated cost of loss for families is  341,000 US$ (average $1,000 per family)

The local Solidarity for the Urban Poor Federation  - SUPF  -  from districts over Phnom Penh came  together to the community with support materials.

An Emergency working group was established between the UNCHS, UPDF ,URC, USG and SUPF.

With expenditure of around $US5,000 the group managed to purchase  300 plastic tents, mattresses, mosquito nets, eating utensils, and water bins.   With these the community was settled on the street around midnight.

March 13:
The  local authority suggested people could return to the top of the building to live after the authorities had checked the safety of the structure.

The KDaun Penh Khan Chief, Mr. Suan Rindy met with the fire victims.  He said Municipality of Phnom Penh still agreed that people could live on their original location if the building was safe.

In the evening, the Governor  of Phnom Penh visited the site and  he discussed options  with the people about either a new site that people would voluntary move to,  or  reconstructing homes on the fire site if it was deemed to be safe.

SUPF and the UPDF donated  food and drinking water

Through collaboration with NGOs,  fund raising for the victims would continue.
