Some major achievements

Arif this year was awarded the Hilal-I-Imtiaz for public services, an award which, is the Government of Pakistan’s highest civil award for a living person.

He has been a Member of the very prestigious Jury of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, a Member of the Steering Committee of the Award and a Member of the Technical Review Committee for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, collectively for a period of ten years.

Arif received the Karachi Development Authority’s Best Building Award in 1983

He received the Third ‘International Year for the Shelter-less’ Memorial Prize of the Japan Housing Association in 1990,.

He is on the Governing Board of numerous local, national and international civic and public affairs institutions, including the International Institute for Environment and Development in the UK, and the Asian Coalition of Housing Rights in Bangkok.

He is also the Chairman of the Urban Resource Centre in Karachi, which Arif helped set-up, which is without doubt, one of the most important institutions in the city which conducts research and is active in advocating issues which affect all of us who live here.

Arif has also worked in Post-Soviet Central Asia helping urban managers deal with the consequences of the collapse of the former Soviet Union.

If all this wasn’t enough, Arif has also published twelve books and countless reports and papers on issues, which deal with architecture, housing, planning, communities, the environment, development and social change.

Needless to say Arif is a founding member of ACHR and continues to be one of our most active members.

The PRINCE CLAUS AWARD for "URBAN HEROS, 2000"

Since 1997, the Prince Claus Awards have been presented to people and organizations to recognise and encourage their exceptional achievements in the field of culture and development in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Carribean.

The fund does not only honor artists, intellectuals and cultural organizations for the high quality of their work. It also looks in particular at the positive changes they bring to their society and culture.

This year the theme of the award is Urban Heroes.

The focus is on people who have made a valuable contribution to the welfare of fast-growing cities by taking resourceful initiatives.
