Workshops in Jakarta were issue-based, participated by urban farmers, becak drivers, squatters, street children, street vendors, fisher-folks and factory workers from the Greater Jakarta area, Bandung (West Java), Cirebon (West Java) and Pontianak (Kalimantan), and foreign participants from the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and South Africa.

The workshops were organised in 4 kampungs (communities):

1. Muara Baru, North Jakarta on informal economic activities, participated by becak drivers, street vendors, factory workers, street children, and Malaysia and Philippines participants.

2. Penjaringan, North Jakarta on eviction participated by representatives of squatter communities, eviction victims, and participants from Thailand and Philippines.

3. Kampung Rawa, West Jakarta on saving, attended by saving groups in Jakarta and South African participants.

4. Blok Asin, West Jakarta on settlement and other related issues, participated by flooded communities, alternative health groups, garbage recycling groups, urban farmers, and participants from Philippines and Thailand.

YOGJAKARTA

The workshop to share experiences among local and international participants was attended by street children and musicians, becak drivers, domestic helpers, squatters, street vendors, transvestites, disabled people, motorbike taxi drivers, and the homeless, all from Yogyakarta, Solo and the surrounding towns of Central Java, and international participants from Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Kenya.

A dialogue with the local authority was planned, and the issue being raised was ID card that discriminates against the urban poor who were generally registered in their original villages and not in the city where they now live and work. The lack of local ID card in their possession gives the local authority legal rights to have policies that discriminate against the urban poor.

SURABAYA

The Surabaya workshop was attended bystreet vendors, street children, street musicians, sex workers, riverbank communities, eviction victims, waste-pickers, traditional market small traders, and becak drivers, from 15 cities in East Java, and international participants from Pakistan, Philippines and India.

A dialogue with the local authority was organised but the representatives from government and city council did not show up.
The main issues raised were eviction of riverbank communities, of sex workers, and from those doing economic activities on the street.

SULAWESI

The APD2 events in Sulawesi involved the whole island namely, participants from the four capital cities of the four provinces: Makassar, Palu, Kendari and Manado.

The urban poor groups that participated were miners, street vendors, becak drivers, urban farmers, factory workers, and eviction victims, and participants from South Korea, Nepal and South Africa.

PALEMBANG

The participants of the event in Palembang were grassroots groups such as becak drivers, street vendors, boatmen, and others, and international participants from Thailand and Malaysia

The sharing among participants was focused especially on Palembang as a river city, a potential for tourism that resulted in eviction of the poor who have been living along the riverbanks for decades.

A dialogue with the Governor resulted in the promise from the governor not to harass or evict the informal economic activities of the urban poor.
