Cambodia Update March 2007

The Borrie Kiella Inauguration

There are now a number of demonstrated feasible and affordable alternatives to eviction in Phnom Penh Cambodia. We highlight one such project here , Former slum residents of the area moved into these brand new apartments in March 2007.
In this project the land developer has persuaded all of the house dwellers to move to 3 buildings of 6 story walk up flats which are provided by the developer on part of the original site. In return the house dwellers allow the developer to take the more valuable portion of land for commercial development. It has been described as a “win – win “ situation for the private sector, the people and the city”. The developer can still make substantial profit and no-one is evicted.
